Asked Questions About the Exumas Most Asked: How did you get the water to look so clear in the photos? Tsk, such skepticism! The waters of the Bahamas are amazingly clear mostly because the sand is formed by chemical precipitation instead of erosion. Can we fish? Yes & no; fishing is banned in the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, but is fine before and after. The first day and a half are generally outside of the Park. What are "cays"? A "cay" (pronounced "Key") is an island. Derived from the English word for a dock; Quay. Why can't we do a trip in October? Click me. Why can't we just fish for food? Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park was created as a nursery to protect the little conchs and groupers so they can grow and populate the whole Bahamas. What's this about sailing the kayaks? Ibis Tours uses folding kayaks that are so stable that a sail and leeboard can be attached. When the conditions are right, they fly! Does this mean I don't have to paddle? No, it just means that you will have to live by the Ibis Motto; :"Sail when you can; paddle when you must". Why does Ibis only offer trips in March, April and May? Ibis has decided that the best months for kayaking are between March and May, after the winter's harsh north winds and before Hurricane season. The inn has a warm and friendly atmosphere and is kayak friendly. Make reservations early. If they are full, they can help find you another place. Where are the Bahamas? The Bahamas cover a large area, mostly water, of islands, reefs and deep troughs. The islands are east of Florida. Do I need a passport and special shots to visit? A passport is required as of January 2007. There are no special shots required to visit the Bahamas. Are the Bahamas British? The Bahamas has been an independent, and stable, democracy since 1973.
